Tips for Success in Exercise

I can help you find the right mix of activities for your goals, body type, and level of fitness. Regular physical activity can improve health, both physical and emotional, on many levels. It doesn't take a huge effort to receive major benefits either.

Become a Fan-addict

Those who exercise for at least an hour daily, 5 to 6 days a week enjoy the good feeling physical activity gives to those who are regular participants. You know you're addicted when you lift weights or run the stadium when you don't really want to because you know you'll feel good afterwards and sleep better at night.
The real fan-addict often seeks the release of tension and surge of feel-good neurotransmitters that sustained exercison generates. The hardest part is getting in the habit and the rest of this page has suggestions on how to achieve the transition from flab to fab. You can do it and the first word of an achiever is NOW!

Try different things until you find something you like.

Possibilities include running, step aerobics, swimming, weight lifting, yoga, biking, racquetball, tennis, dancing, and more. Shena Groger, 2006

Join an Exercise Class

When you attend classes regularly, you get to know the other participants and make friends. Then it's a social event as well and seeing your friends every week makes it a lot more fun. Also the music and the instructor-led atmosphere often motivates you to put out much more effort than you could muster on your own.

Adopt a Mindset

Don't act like exercise is something you work into your schedule. Assign it a priority close to eating, sleeping, and earning a living. It shouldn't be something you have to think about whether you have time for or not. Consider it essential to healthy self-care and not an option. Do you ever consider not bothering with showering? (Only if you're too sick to get out of bed.) Exercise should be the same, just a normal part of everyday.
You don't have to spend a lot of time. Just think of it as a 20 minute essential. Often I have a "dread it" feeling about exercise, but I get started. Frequently I don't think I'll be able to do more than 20 minutes, but I end up doing 3 times that amount.

Change it Up Mindy Lewis White, 2006

I constantly try new things so I don't get bored. Doing new exercises and classes helps your body to be impacted in different ways so you continue to get stronger and more fit. Also it keeps you excited.

Set Goals

Write down your health and fitness goals, both long-term and short. You need a vision of what you want to achieve and a realistic plan to get there. People who have an aimless, lackadaisical attitude about exercise never achieve much.

Join a Gym

It's easier to work out in a gym away from home because once you're there you can't decide to clean the pool, help your daughter with her schoolwork, or any number of other things around the house that can use up all your time till it's too late and you're too tired to be active. \
