Developmental Skills Training for Weight Loss (as well as Insomnia and Addictions)

The Solution Method was developed at the University
of California, San Francisco’s School of Medicine and is
the only program other than weight loss surgery that
has been shown in scientific studies to produce lasting weight loss. It’s based on Developmental Skills Training (DST) which equips us with the skills to overcome addictive behavior.

Background

Developmental Skills Training is a fairly recent addition
to the various modalities of psychological healing. It is primarily based on the work of Eric Erickson, a psychologist who is credited with coining the terms identity crisis, midlife crisis, and separation anxiety.

One Excess or Another

Even if our weight started due to other causes, the nature of obesity is that it is associated with hormonal and neurotransmitter changes that create excessive appetites. If we stop overeating without balancing our chemistry, either we regain the weight or keep it off only to birth another substitute excess. Examples are: over-exercise, eating disorders, over-spending, smoking, drinking, and overworking. In Solution Training, we increase our internal skills that create balance chemically and find that the drive to overeat fades without another excess replacing it.

My Experience

I had struggled with sleeping problems for 14 years at the time I started this training in 2004. I used large amounts of daily exercise to cope and believed my sleeping difficulties were related to thyroid medication.

After about 18 months of Solution work, I was suddenly and completely healed of my insomnia within the space of 3 days. This came about after writing letters to my parents (both deceased) in which I detailed events of the past and my feelings about them.

I then realized that my sleeping problems had been a consequence of things that had happened many years ago that I was still carrying around. Previous to those cathartic two letters, I had little knowledge of the hard feelings I was holding.

A New Life

Needless to say, my life has markedly changed since those pivotal 3 days and I am very grateful. I believe Solution training could bring complete healing to many others with sleeping disorders as well as to persons with various addictions.

Other Benefits

Besides the method’s capacity to change lives through inner healing, it also teaches participants powerful ways of working through difficult issues, discovering the positives, and finding peace. In addition, those enrolled become skilled in the art of making a polite, but authoritative request.

These skills are absolutely invaluable to all in modern society with the issues and complexities of normal life. The level of stress is frequently high in the work day world as well as in relationships.

I find the Solution greatly facilitates peaceful resolution with personal issues as well as in conflicts with others. These skills aid in keeping my level of stress low while working a job, managing a household of seven, and running a business.

Help for Youth

I think these interpersonal and resolution techniques should be taught in public middle and high schools to prepare young people for the challenges of adult life as well as helping them with the issues of adolescence. I believe this would result in youth being much better adjusted, socially adept, and in possession of a greater measure of inner strength.
